Good morning. This is Sean Wilson, the mayor of Waynesville, with your weekly update for August 26, 2024. We have a few things taking place this week and some general reminders. First, I wanted to remind everyone that we have the general election taking place on November 5th. The last date to register to vote is October 9th. If you have not voted in a while relocated, or if you have never voted, I would encourage you to verify your registration and participate in this coming election.
Speaker 1:On Monday, september 2nd, city Hall will be closed in observance of Labor Day. The city will reopen on Tuesday, resuming our regular business hours. This week, the Waynesville St Robert Joint Airport Board will conduct its monthly meeting. This meeting is always held on the last Tuesday of each month, so mark your calendars for future meetings if you plan to attend. Our occurring agenda items include the budget fuel sales reports, which attract monthly our marketing and operations update. Some of the new business that will be discussed this week is our order approving the alternate service pattern, which is the change from Nashville to Chicago, and TBN terminal project updates.
Speaker 1:Next month's meeting will be held on September 24th at 3 pm in the Waynesville City Hall. The meeting locations rotate monthly between St Robert and Waynesville. This month we will be meeting in St Robert. Also. Next week is committee week. This means that on Tuesday at 5 pm we will hold our roads and grounds committee meeting. This is where our citizens can attend and share any concerns pertaining to roads and grounds issues. There are two ways that you can voice your concern. One way is you can show up to the meeting, although I know is at five o'clock. Maybe you can't make the meeting, but you can also notify your councilman and they can introduce the concern at the committee meeting. I highly advise that you attend, so you can. Your concern can be documented. However, you do not have to wait until the meeting to express your concern. Talk to your councilman. If you can't get in contact with your councilman for some reason, then you can always call me. We want open lines of communications with our citizens as we continue to work to improve our community. Please remember that Last week I shared an instructional video on how to identify what ward or district you reside in.
Speaker 1:This is very important because it lets you know what district of governance is responsible for your area. This means that you can find out, if you live within the city limits, which district is pertaining to the county commission or even the ambulance districts, to name a few. You will be able to identify if you live, of course, within the city limits, and this is a great starting point to identify and contact your elected officials. This sometimes creates confusion, so I wanted to address this issue. During the last election, many people thought they were within the city limits, mogov and go to the voter tab and there, when you check your registration, that's where you'll be able to identify, put in your name and identify what district you reside in. You just click on a tab that says my districts.
Speaker 1:If you have missed any of our weekly updates, I recently introduced a city podcast for your convenience. I would like to also add that we had a constituent request, a transcript as an alternative to the recorded update, and I'm happy to say that we have the transcripts now available for those who prefer to read or those who are hearing impaired. Okay, our goal is to keep everybody informed. Thank you for that recommendation. You may have noticed our electric department changing a utility pole at Elm Street and Historic Route 66 on Monday, august 26. The work was completed at 1 pm and we will be sure to let everyone know of future projects that may be happening throughout the city. We appreciate everyone's patience as we make the necessary upgrades for future expansion.
Speaker 1:I do want to remind everyone of some events that will be taking place here this month. Of course, patriot Day Festival, saturday, september 7th, will take place in Ruby Duke Park from 10 am to 4 pm. Will take place in Ruby Duke Park from 10 am to 4 pm. This will be a time of remembrance of the tragic event that took place on 9-11, 23 years ago. There will also be vendors, food and entertainment and many free offerings to the community. This is sponsored by the armed service YMCA.
Speaker 1:Of course, we have the third annual hogs and frogs. That will be taking place September 20th to the 21st. If you would like more information about hogs and frogs and how you can participate in all of the events that's going to be available, visit wwwroute66hogsandfrogfestcom. Wwwroute66hogsandfrogfestcom for more event information.
Speaker 1:The Waynesville Animal Shelter, kitten and Puppy Division, loving Paws Adoption Center and Dogwood Animal Shelter will all be at the Waynesville Rubidoux Park on August 31st, that's this Saturday, from 11 am to 4 pm. There will be a great number of available dogs and cats for adoption to choose from. Don't miss out on this awesome opportunity to meet tons of different people and also you can see many different types of animals. There will also be a catering from Route 66 Taco Company and they will have food available for either monetary donation to one of the shelters or if you bring a bag of food or other pet supplies and you donate, your donation is an equivalent of $20 or more minimum. This is a great cause, so I encourage you to go out and attend and this concludes this week's updates, and I look forward to seeing you around the town.
